Our PBIS StoryLincoln Center of the Arts

Lincoln Center of the Arts became involved in the first PBIS initiative in the Milwaukee Public School System. Faculty and staff have seen great results since they began the implementation of PBIS!

One of the changes made by the Implementation Team at Lincoln was the use of the Incidents by Location and Incidents by Time reports. Based on the data collected and analyzed from these reports the team strategically placed supervision in areas that were potential "hot-spots" for trouble. As a result, the faculty and staff at Lincoln saw an increase in office discipline referrals, but a decrease in suspensions. In fact, since last year, Lincoln has reduced overall suspensions by 21%!

The Implementation Team at Lincoln also used the data reports to determine when to hold "boosters" or revisit the expectations of the school. The teachers then used lesson plans called "cool tools" to teach and reinforce the expectations to the students.

District Snapshot

Milwaukee Public Schools implemented Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in 110 schools. The first group began implementing Universal/Tier 1 interventions at the start of the 2009 – 2010 school year. Before PBIS, MPS redesigned the student incident referral form. The new referral now is more user-friendly for both the person completing the referral and the person entering the data. Using the data collected on the form, MPS developed five new reports to assist the PBIS Implementation Team at each school with decision making. The reports include: Incidents by Location, Incidents by Time, Incidents by Type, Average Incidents per Day per Month, and Incidents by Student.
